  • •A captained boat. There is no road to Kice or Cape Romano.

The photograph is the Cape Romano dome houses in August 2019, still above the water. Flyhighnewport, CC BY-SA 4.0. Hurricane Ian and the years of erosion after it put those domes down. Do not expect this picture. Expect a shoal and a submerged hazard. Do not swim through the ruins and do not climb what is left.

Why this is a boat day

Kice Island and Cape Romano sit south of Marco Island. There is no bridge to Kice. The drive from downtown Naples is to Rose Marina or to Caxambas Park, 909 Collier Court, about 25.9082° N, 81.7131° W, and then the boat. Figure 45 to 70 minutes in the car depending on where you start in Naples, then the ride through Caxambas Pass and down the outside or the inside, depending on the wind. Cape Romano's shoals are about 25.851° N, 81.674° W. That pin is a planning point for the old dome site, not a marina.

Caxambas Pass is the door. Its tide is NOAA station 8725083, not the Naples bay station 8725110. A falling tide against a north wind makes a short, steep sea in the pass. Captains wait. If your group needs to be back at a Naples dinner at a fixed hour, say that before you book, because a delayed pass is a delayed dinner. The ramp guide is the launch if you are trailing your own boat. Most visitors should not make this their first solo inlet.

What you are looking at

The dome houses were built in the early 1980s on the sand at Cape Romano. Storms and erosion walked the Gulf into them over the following decades. The 2019 photograph is the late stage, domes still in the air, water already around the pilings. After Hurricane Ian they are an underwater hazard. Treat the site as structure you stay off. Props, swimmers, and curiosity are a bad mix on a shoal with rebar and concrete you cannot fully see. Shell the beach at Kice and Morgan Beach. Leave the ruins.

Kice is a barrier island. The shelling is the same rule as everywhere else on this coast: empty shells only. Live shells, sand dollars, and sea stars go back. The FWC page is linked from shelling and tides. A winter or early-spring low around −0.2 to −0.6 feet, walked from two hours before low until an hour after, is the window. Use the Caxambas prediction. A west wind can fill the bar in even when the number looks good.

Morgan Beach is the other name you will hear on a Marco shell trip. It is a sand stop, not a park with restrooms. Bring water. There is no food boat you can count on. The day is the boat, the sand, and the ride.

Who runs the trip, and what is actually priced

Florida Adventures & Rentals, on Marco, publishes a 3-hour dolphin eco tour at $99 a person on the October 2026 ticket check. That is a dolphin product. Ask whether the day's route includes Kice or Cape Romano. A dolphin loop in the Marco River is not this trip. Their site is floridaadventuresandrentals.com.

Dolphin Explorer is a Marco operator with a public site at dolphinexplorer.com. A single Cape Romano package price was not sitting in plain HTML on the check for this update. Ask them if the south islands are on the route and what the boat price is for your date. Do not assume the dolphin fare is the shelling fare.

Rising Tide Explorers publishes private boats at $550 for two hours and $575 for three hours, up to six guests, on the Rookery Bay boat-tour page. Those hours are a bay or barrier-island block. Cape Romano from Naples is a longer run than a three-hour Rookery Bay cruise. From Marco it is more realistic, and it may still be a custom hour rather than the $575 card. Say "Kice and Cape Romano" in the quote so you are not sold a three-hour estuary tour under a different name. Rising Tide's site is risingtidefl.com.

A private boat from Naples, rather than Marco, has to cross a lot of water or run the inside the long way. Gulf Breeze's 4-hour private charter starts at $750 for up to six, which is a Keewaydin-length day, not automatically a Cape Romano day. Put the destination in the note. The rate cards are on private boat tours and Keewaydin.

How to spend the hours

Leave Marco on a rising or slack tide if the captain wants an easier pass, shell on the low, and come back before the afternoon sea breeze in summer or before a front fills in during winter. October through April is the calmer set of months. June through September can be done on a clean morning and should not be booked as an all-day outside run. Hurricane season runs through November 30. A small-craft advisory ends the conversation.

Group size matters. Six is the usual private cap. More than six is the 6-pack guide. Children need shade, water, and a real idea of how long they will sit before they step on sand. There is no store on Kice.

Dolphins are likely in the Marco River and the pass and are not the point of this page. If they are the point, book the wildlife tour and stay closer to town. Fishing the same water is the seasonal calendar. Sunset from Marco is a separate boat if you want to be out when the sun drops. The sunset table is the clock. Do not stack a Cape Romano shell walk and a Naples sunset cruise on the same afternoon unless the captain says the hours work, in writing.

The domes are history. The trip is a beach. If the photograph in your head is the 2019 domes standing in the Gulf, update the picture before you disappoint a boat full of people. Tell them about the shells and the ride. Tell them the structures are down.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. They are on a shoal south of Marco Island, and since Hurricane Ian they are a submerged hazard. You need a boat from Rose Marina, Caxambas, or a captain who will make the run. Do not climb or swim the ruins.
About 25.851° N, 81.674° W. That is a planning point, not a channel. Caxambas Pass tide is NOAA 8725083.
Florida Adventures lists a 3-hour dolphin eco tour at $99 a person. Ask if Cape Romano is included. Rising Tide's private boats are $550 for two hours and $575 for three, which may be too short for this run. Dolphin Explorer's Cape Romano price was not a single public number on the pages checked in October 2026. Get it in the quote.
A low tide around −0.2 to −0.6 feet, two hours before low until an hour after, on a day the Gulf is calm enough to cross the pass. Empty shells only.
