Keewaydin Island Map: Anchoring, Shuttle Drop & Shelling
Where to anchor at Keewaydin, where the shuttle lands, and which cuts to stay out of. A boater's chart in words for the 8-mile island.

The photograph is an overhead of Keewaydin, public domain via Wikimedia Commons. It is a planning picture of a long, thin island, Gulf on one side and the inside channel on the other. It is not a chart and it does not show today's sandbars. The cuts move. The markers and the depth sounder win.
Keewaydin is about eight miles of barrier island between Gordon Pass on the north and the Marco River on the south. There is no road. Everyone you see walked off a shuttle or a private boat, or they anchored and swam in. The mistakes are the same every weekend: anchoring in the Intracoastal cut, landing in the middle of the island where the beach is a narrow throat, and staying so long that the tide leaves the hull on the sand.
Four places, not one beach
Think of the island as four stops.
Gordon Pass is the north cut. It is the way in from Naples Bay and from Port O'Call. It is a channel. Cruise boats, fishing boats, and rentals that are allowed only as far as the captain takes them all use it. Do not anchor in the cut. Do not drift in the middle of it to put the ladder down. The north end of the island, just inside the pass on the beach side, is where a lot of Naples boats make their first stop. You are still in a busy corner. Set a stern anchor so the bow points offshore or into the shallows the way the other boats are doing, and leave a gap for traffic.
The Hemingway water shuttle from Rose Marina on Marco Island drops passengers on a beach, not in the pass. Gulf Breeze's Naples shuttle does the same from the Naples side. Those drops are the signed or customary beach landings the operator uses that day, not a promise that every foot of sand is a dock. Ask the crew where to stand for the pickup. Missing a shuttle because the group walked a mile south is the expensive version of a nice shell.
The middle of the island is the narrow part, with a boardwalk character in the old descriptions and a lot of private-feeling vegetation. It is a poor landing for a group. The beach can be a strip. The bay side is a creek edge, not a swimming pool. Keep moving unless you have a reason and the depth.
The south tip, where the island meets the Marco River side, is the shell walk people mean. It is also the anchorage that gets crowded on a winter low tide. Stern-anchor off the Gulf beach, out of the inside channel. The channel is the road. The beach is the parking lot, and only where you are not in the road. A west wind holds water on that tip and can erase the shell bar you came for. A north wind after a front can uncover it and make the Gulf side bumpy on the way home.
| Zone | Anchor or land? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Gordon Pass cut | Neither. Transit only. | Channel traffic. Wake and a tow if you sit in it. |
| North beach, just inside the pass | Stern anchor, out of the cut | First stop from Naples. Still busy. |
| Shuttle beach drop | Land where the crew says | Pickup is a clock, not a search. |
| Middle boardwalk stretch | Keep going | Narrow sand, easy to block a creek. |
| South tip / Marco River side | Stern anchor off the Gulf beach | Shells on a low tide. Stay out of the ICW. |
Stern anchor, wake, and the dogs
On the Intracoastal side you are in a channel or next to one. A beam anchor that lets the boat swing into the cut is how you get waked, how you swing into a passing boat, and how you spend the afternoon resetting. A stern anchor toward the beach, with enough scope that you are not grinding the hull, is the usual Naples solution on the Gulf side, where the water shoals. If you do not know the drill, take the shuttle or a captained boat. The Keewaydin Island guide has the October 2026 shuttle and charter prices. Gulf Breeze's 3-hour private shelling boat is $500 for up to six. Naples Boat Charters' 4-hour eco trip is $500 and the captain stays with the boat. Those captains pick the zone. You do not.
Wake is your problem even if you anchored well. A cruise boat leaving the pass throws a roll onto a beamy anchorage. Point the bow into it if you can. Do not tie to the mangroves. Do not use a nesting island as a dolphin viewing pier. The birds on the south bars are the reason the wildlife page says stay off the rookeries.
Dogs are a boat rule. Hemingway does not take them. Gulf Breeze does, with a cleaning fee, and they stay off the seats. The island is not a leash-free county park. If you are on the shuttle beach or a crowded south-tip anchorage, a loose dog in a group of strangers is how the day ends early. Bring a leash. There is no fresh water and no trash can. Everything, including the dog bags, goes back on the boat.
Shells, the food boat, and the clock
Empty shells only. Live shells, sand dollars, and sea stars go back. That is the FWC rule, repeated on shelling and tides because people still ask. The south tip on a winter low of about −0.2 to −0.6 feet, from two hours before low until an hour after, is the walk. Use NOAA 8725110 for the Naples side of the island. The hour moves every day.
A weekend food and ice boat sometimes anchors off the island. It is not a schedule you can put on a calendar. Hemingway's own note, already on the Keewaydin page, is that vendors are not there every day and you should bring a cooler. Assume you are carrying lunch and water. Assume there is no bathroom. The eight miles feel longer at 2 p.m. with a child who needed a restroom at noon.
Leave before the tide traps you. A falling tide under a hull that was floating at 11 can be a grounded hull at 1, and the next rise may be after your shuttle. If you are the private boat, the captain should be the one watching the sounder. If you are the shuttle passenger, be at the drop when they said. The island does not have a later bus.
The boat ramp guide is how you get your own boat to Gordon Pass or to Caxambas if you are coming from the south. The sunset page is a different clock if you want to be offshore when the sun drops. Do not try to be the last boat on the south tip and also the sunset cruise at Tin City. Pick one.
