Hurricane Season: June 1 – November 30

Florida is in the hurricane zone, but that doesn't mean you can't visit. Most seasons pass without major impact.

Key Facts

| Stat | Info | |------|------| | Season | June 1 – November 30 | | Peak Months | August – October | | Average Storms Affecting SWFL | 1-2 per year (varies wildly) | | Direct Major Hits | Rare (but possible) |

Where things stand in October 2026

Hurricane Ian (September 2022) did the lasting damage on this coast. Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton in 2024 added more surge and wind. By fall 2026, Sanibel, Captiva, and Fort Myers Beach are open to visitors again, with a lot of new construction still underway.

Two landmarks are not back:

  • Naples Pier is closed for a city rebuild that started in January 2026. The target being reported locally is about July 2027. The beach is open from Broad Avenue South and 13th Avenue South.
  • Fort Myers Beach Pier is also still being rebuilt, with local officials talking about a 2027 finish. The beach and Times Square area are open.

Check a forecast inside 7 days of travel during June–November. A quiet week in October is normal. A named storm in the Gulf is a reason to use a refundable room.

Should I Visit?

Yes, If:

  • You get travel insurance (cancel-for-any-reason type).
  • You book refundable hotel rates.
  • You monitor forecasts 7-10 days before travel.

Maybe Reconsider If:

  • You're traveling in late August or September (peak risk).
  • You have zero flexibility in your dates.

What Happens If a Storm Approaches

  1. 7-10 Days Out: Forecasts become more accurate. Watch the cone.
  2. 3-5 Days Out: Hotels issue updates. Many offer free cancellation.
  3. 1-2 Days Out: Evacuations may be ordered. Airlines adjust schedules.
  4. If You're There: Follow hotel instructions. Move inland if ordered.

Preparation Tips

  • Travel Insurance: Buy it. Seriously.
  • Flexible Dates: Have backup plans.
  • Monitor: NOAA, Weather Channel, local news (NBC-2, WINK).

Silver Lining: Hurricane season is also low season. If no storms are brewing, you get amazing deals and empty beaches.
